A Blank Slate

So much to talk about, so little time! It's been two weeks today since our furniture arrived. The boxes are slowly disappearing from the house and we are on the verge of getting some of the furniture we need to fill up our new space and make it function the way we're imagining. I managed to snap these nice, uncluttered, "before" pics of the house before the movers showed up with all of our stuff. I realized as I was uploading the pictures that I failed to take a picture of the front of the house, so look for that later!

This is our dining room, essentially the little nook formed by the bay window at the front of the house. It gets awesome light all day long as the house faces south. The fabric window treatments throughout were left by the previous owners. Little too country for my taste, and though they are still up, they hopefully won't be for much longer. But luckily all of the windows that are key to privacy have nice wooden plantation shutters or blinds, so coming up with new curtains (which I'd like to try my hand at making myself) won't need to be that big of a priority.

The living room. The little "Welcome" sign on the wall was a thoughtful housewarming gift from our next door neighbor in Kalamazoo.

My houseplants huddled in the corner. Unfortunately the trip down and adjustment to a new home didn't go well for all of them...

The kitchen is pretty small, this is the lone little bank of cabinets.

Though the backsplash in the last photo appears to be a nice white subway tile, it is actually a painted faux brick treatment that carries on to cover the whole adjacent wall! I've never seen quite the likes and I still have mixed feelings about it. I plan to investigate its vintage. I have a suspicion that it may actually be original.

But the kitchen does benefit from nice shiny new stainless steel appliances!

Little bathroom. The polka dot shower curtain was a 12:30am Meijer purchase after we arrived late Sunday night from Kalamazoo and realized we were going to need one if we wanted to bathe in the morning! Though I still find it kind of cheery, it's getting a little too precious as time goes on. The walls are a very, very light blush pink, not something I would have chosen, but I don't really mind it.

Guest bedroom

Office. This was the kitty safe room till the movers were all done, thus the lovely litter box in the corner.

The master bedroom, which is essentially the entire second floor. It's divided in half by the staircase. This half will be the sleeping side A new master bed is something we have yet to purchase, so we've been sleeping in the spare bedroom in the former master bed which will soon be the spare bed. Hooray for the imminent upgrade from a full to a queen bed!!!

Luckily we have two closets up here!

The other side, which I plan to make into a dressing room/reading nook. I just bought an art deco-ish dressing table and bench from CraigsList this past weekend. I'm going to give it a paint job before putting it in place and I plan to document the process, so look for that!

The finished side of the basement which will be Greg's "man cave", i.e. a den.

This is a little room off the bigger room above that the previous owners just used for storage, but that we're going to make into a mini fitness studio.

Gorgeous screened in back porch! Unfortunately the color that the floor is painted, pretty as it is, is proving highly impractical. It doesn't exactly hide dirt and and black dog hair. I'm thinking a nice chocolate brown might do a lot better.

Ceiling fans are a nice touch!

The back yard is really lovely! It was professionally landscaped. My only complaint is there isn't a lot of variety as far as the plants go. But that can be fixed easily enough!

Little grill patio.

We even have a shed! Though it's completely utilitarian inside and will probably only ever house the lawn mower and garden tools, unlike the shed home offices, guest houses, studios, etc. that are all the trend, it's got great curb appeal!
